Changes and Challenges to be Discussed at the 2009 IPI World Congress
Dear Colleague,
In a little over three months, IPI will hold its annual World Congress in Helsinki, Finland, and the world has changed dramatically since we last gathered in Belgrade in June 2008.

The great political, economic, environmental and technological challenges currently facing the world are the focus of this year’s Congress. In addition to sessions dealing with the ongoing international financial crisis, Russia’s resurgence, and global warming, panels will also discuss topics related to press freedom and the communications industry.

“The International Financial Crisis and the Media”

What are the predicted consequences of the current financial crisis? How will the crisis affect media outlets, already suffering from a decline in readers/viewers and advertising revenue? How has the media reported on the crisis? Has it been getting the story right? Does the media exacerbate financial crises?

"The Bear on the Doorstep – Russia’s Resurgence and the Start of a New Cold War?"

A natural gas pricing dispute that left vast parts of Central and Eastern Europe in the cold; a five-day war with Georgia to defend the rights of Russian citizens living in separatist enclaves; and threats to do the same in other areas – is Russia trying to restore some of its former status, or is this a sign of a possible new Cold War?

“Footprints, Fossil Fuels and Food Prices: Reporting on Climate Change”

Journalists play a crucial role in providing the information that policymakers and the public need to understand the urgency of global warming and climate change-related issues. Is the media doing enough to raise awareness? How can it improve its coverage – in terms of both quantity and quality – of this most global of issues?

“Talking to Terrorists”

Should journalists, who provide the public with the information they need to understand the complexities of the struggle against terrorism, talk with terrorists? Do they do so at the risk of becoming pawns in the terrorists’ public relations campaigns? Where should journalists draw the line?
